The tribes of Israel sometimes fought together and sometimes against one another. The Israelites, whose enemies would periodically overcome them, were saved only by the charismatic individuals known collectively as the Judges. In many ways, this period of biblical history was not unlike the American Wild West of the 19th century... a time when law and order depended upon a handful of gunslingers, some of whom were only marginally better than the outlaws they brought to justice.
